We are proud of the preservation and historical significance of our location in Old Town Medical Arts Building, housed in the former Cedar Street School built in 1916. We are on the site of Lansing’s first school (built in 1847).  O’Connor Occupational Therapy’s strong emphasis on patient and family education fits perfectly in a building on the site that educated Lansing students from 1857-1978, and has been carefully rehabilitated and re-purposed for medical, health, and wellness practices. Our building is historical and our treatment approach is innovative!


O’Connor Occupational Therapy Services, PLLC is proud to embrace technology to innovate how we deliver occupational therapy, provide compensatory strategies, and create cognitive orthotics and to build the scaffolding to help individuals live as independently as possible. We use technology to customize delivery of OT services to “open doors” to opportunities for individuals to live safely and independently in their community.


Assistive Technology. O’Connor Occupational Therapy is proud to partner with and be able to refer to experienced and reputable service providers as experts in areas of Assistive Technology for computer access and Environmental Controls for those with limited functional movement.


Blog https://celticmaze.wordpress.com is available as a means to provide public education and opportunity for review of O’Connor’s personal writings on professional perspective of treatment philosophy, and areas of clinical interests.


Cell phones. Regardless of a simple flip phones or the latest smart phone, we assist patient’s with what technology they have available to them to support use of calendar functions for organization, alarms for prompts, and voice recorders for self-reminders to support memory.


Dropbox, Google Drive, and “Patient Portal” on http://www.oconnorot.com with patient’s permission, O’Connor shares non confidential patient specific information in these on line servers for family’s convenient access to home programs.


Electronic medical record. We are proud to have fully implemented an integrated scheduling and documentation electronic medical record that increases efficiency to allow us to better focus on our patient and track progress.

Google, Google calendars, Gmail are accessible tools that we use as part of cognitive rehab that includes patient education for functional use of free tools to access on computer and synchronize to cell phone for orientation and organization.


Home Evaluations as recommendations for low tech and high tech modification and adaptations for safety and independence to age in place.


In-home emergency response systems. O’Connor OT assists patients and families to enroll with vendors and provides compensatory strategies to reinforce recommendation to wear emergency pendant so the user has access to this safety tool in the event of fall or emergency.


Journal article reviews are commonly shared with our patients and families to provide education and resources on clinical research and emerging treatment approaches.


Khan Academy. O’Connor maintains an active account as a “Teacher” to provide virtual classroom experience for our “Students” as part of functional home exercise programs as part of general cognitive rehabilitation programming and as preparation for more formal academic pursuits.


Lumosity.com O’Connor maintains a subscription to this on-line cognitive training to allow patients trial access before pursuing their own personal subscriptions. We utilize Lumosity for cognitive stimulation to address attention, memory, speed of processing, visual scanning. This format raises the ceiling of task per progress, and provides the user with objective measure of their progress and objective measured comparison to norms.


Money management. We address skill training with an individualized, simulated on-line bill payment as means to practice money management skills and provide opportunity for time management related to bill payment outside of structured OT sessions. We emphasize functional budgeting & banking with cognitive rehab that includes patient education to use on-line and cell phone applications for bank account access and bill payment.


New Research. We educate patients and families on available Clinical Research Trials opportunities, and we support and facilitate communication with patients to researchers in obtaining more information and application process for candidates.


Old Town Medical Arts Building allows us to serve patients and families with ample designated handicapped parking, wheelchair accessible elevator, and patient access to a public gym fully equipped for cardiovascular and strengthening exercise.


Power point presentation. O’Connor OT customizes power point format presentations for patient, family, and caregiver education for easy to read and graphic / visual cues to reinforce OT recommendations, Home Exercise Programs, and compensatory strategies. In addition, our website, www.oconnorot.com provides PDF printable handouts and links to other websites for education and resource development.


Quality standardized assessments and quality program evaluation tools including use of the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory-4’s Participation Index (M2PI) assesses functional performance on admission compared to discharge, was primarily designed to assist in the clinical evaluation of people during the post-acute (post-hospital) period following acquired brain injury, and to assist in the evaluation of rehabilitation programs designed to serve these people.



Rx Medications. O’Connor OT provides resource information on pharmacy set-up services that reduce risk of medication errors and increase visual cue of meds to take, as well as patient and family education on cell phone applications for medication reminders.


Smart 911 www.smart911.com We are proud to assist patients and families with emergency planning including enrollment in “Smart 911” as an important tool. We assist our most vulnerable patients (those with spinal cord injuries who are dependent on caregivers for evacuating) to enroll if their county of residence participates. In counties that do not offer “Smart 911” O’Connor has a long history of assisting families to call their non-emergency local dispatch to request a “flag premise file” or “house watch” file to serve this purpose.


Text reminders. Our electronic scheduling system automatically sends text reminders for appointments 24 hours before scheduled appointment. O’Connor routinely communicates via text for personal appointment reminders and appointment confirmation for patient / family convenience to have “written” reminder to support memory/ recall. We’ve implemented use of a subscription text service to provide time-specific, reinforcement of memory cues via text message.


Unique opportunities through use of on line resources such as Survey Monkey and forms of “Tele-rehabilitation.” We are proud to innovate by implementing Survey Monkey as an OT compensatory tool as an adjunct to face to face OT sessions. Our customized OT Surveys actively engage the patient to review day / week and to provide additional cues, prompts, reminders and reinforcement of strategies outside of structured OT session; O’Connor Occupational Therapy Services has implemented use of “tele-rehabilitation” in some instances as an adjunct to face to face treatment to provide more frequent contact than geographic location may allow, successfully utilizing email / instant messaging, Skype, and “Go-To-Meeting.”


Video Instruction for Home Exercise Program. In an effort to provide multiple mediums to best meet our patient’s and family’s needs, O’Connor OT is proud to offer our patients individualized on-line video instruction of upper extremity home exercise programs.  Printed copies of the home programs provide professional color photographs as visual demonstrations, with customized text for instructions that are easy for patients and caregivers to follow. Wearable fitness telemetry devices. We are excited by the increase availability of affordable high tech wearable fitness telemetry devices. We have assisted patients to pursue a telemetry device / wearable fitness technology for tracking of activity level, quality of sleep, and heart rate as means for data collection for physician and as effort to use as a motivational tool to encourage the individual’s activity.


Xo-skeletons. Functional electrical stimulation to stimulate muscles of those with brain injury or spinal cord injury has been a trusted modality to contribute to normalized tone and increased motor control for increased functional use for years. We are proud to partner with and be able to refer to experienced and reputable service providers as experts in areas of functional electrical stimulation. Technology currently available in the form of electrodes in custom fitted garments that serve as exoskeletons make caregiver follow through to don electrodes nearly foolproof.
